Following my mum's funeral , the hundreds sms I received, cards , emails and the minute silence before the bkara 2 km swim, made me realise that sports is not all about competing , winning , pain , sweat , hard training and determination...........it made me also aware that sports involves a circle of people who are willing to show solidarity and give a helping hand when needed. Words cannot express how much I appreciated those encouraging words and gestures in these hard times.

Ironman UK September 2008

My ironman account is for you out there who love sports but because of life’s commitments have always had to suppress the lion within. If I finished an ironman event , so can you.

After a relatively long period of hibernation from volleyball, 200/400 m sprints , rowing and canoeing this 49 year old general practioner was settled with his family and a private practice . He had finished building the family dream house when he started to become ...

William Livingston and Pam Bachelor made their best during our stay in the UK to make things easy for us. We had nothing to do except to think about our race and execute on the day.

The Alarm was on at 3.30am. I woke up, prepared my breakfast and off we went with the car to the race start. I was very very nervous, as usual. William tried his ...

Yesterday, Sunday the 25th of May 2008 I did a cycle sportive in Wales called Gran Fondo Cymru (North Wales). Right from the start we knew that it was not going to be an easy day out on the bike because we had 146 kilometers and 2,760 meters of climbing in front of us. The weather didn’t help much either. The day was characterised by gale force winds, which didn’t cease a minute and rain showers predicted for the afternoon. The ride was meant to be a training ride with some members of the ...

I have a brand new PC15 heart rate monitor for sale. Had an older one and got broken. Took it for repair and waited ages to get back a reply. Since nothing came back to me after 2 weeks I decided to buy another HRM. After another 2-3 weeks or so I got a reply telling me that my old HRM has been replaced by a completely new one. I also have the chest belt that goes with it (used a few times) and a handle bar mount for the watch which has never been used.

4 days to go to my 3rd Ironman and the usual doubts and thoughts come to my mind. No matter how much training you do and the amount of training you put in, the last few days are always the same. Ironman is a journey. Its all about pacing and proper execution.

My target is to keep a steady pace from the beginning. A strong swim with the least possible hassel... I dont fancy getting hit for a whole 3.8km in the head. A quick transition but I think this will take a bit longer then expected ...

Pacing in Ironman

How disappointing it must be to have a great bike section and then suddenly see your race fall to pieces in the run, the marathon! It’s not the first time that we read about this happening to athletes in an Ironman. Some start wondering what could have gone wrong and the first answer is usually that they haven't done enough training on the bike. So they go back home, pile up miles and miles of bike training, only to come back the following year, possibly with a faster bike ...

Hi all,

I owe it to all those people watching me for most of the day while I was swimming, cycling and running round Klagenfurt to hear the real story of what was happening out there. In addition, seeing that there are so many folks trying their hand at the Iron Distance next year, it may be of interest to hear how a first-timer tackled his first attempt at Going Long.

When I filed in my application just over a year ago I had the reassuring cushion of a long time to go until the race ...

I am now in my second season of Ironman training, preparing for my third one. Training for Ironman does take a lot of time for an athlete's week. An average of 20hrs a week are needed to prepare the best way possible for this long day. Personally I think that there are three key sessions though which one needs to give importance to:

1. Long Run

2. Long Bike / followed idealy by at least 30mins of running

3. Interval Bike session

Doing these three sessions well, and including ...

Dear fellow athletes and friends,

As per curiosity's sake of a few of you, here is some information about the what I have been up to race-wise.

Living in China means that my racing season starts three months later than it used to do in Europe because the first races only start in April and end around October or November, unlike in Europe when I used to start racing in the middle of January and race until September.

My early season was characterised by 4 tough races in a space ...

Those of you who know me might remember that I suffered from a terrible running injury for the first three months of this year. In view of that injury, I was planning to abandon my participation in China's first ever Ironman and Half Ironman race in HaiKou city, HaiNan province, the latter Half Ironman race also known as the 70.3 Triathlon race.

I have never recalled feeling so nervous the week of a race. This was only my second triathlon in one and a half years and I would be going from ...

What a show! We have again proved, if proof was ever needed, that we at triathlon rank with the best. Donatelle did us proud, Danica re-wrote the definition of the spirit of triathlon, Brian and Michael sang the old adage “Bhall-imbid aktar ma jimmatura aktar jitjieb” all the way, and this with our younger guns still to unleash their true potential. Keith just wasn’t his day, Fabio out with a puncture and Mark yet to oil his engines properly.

Dear All,

There are now three days left for the Friendly Tournament Triathlon to be held on Saturday at 2pm. Certainly all those racing, except myself, are looking forward to a strong performance. This is the first important race of the season for most of you, and for the National Team its a very important race to get selected for the Small Nations Championships. Hopefully all of you are now into their taper mode. There are some people who might prefer to take a 10 day taper and other ...

It's been ages since I've seen you all. I think it was the national championships when I last saw everyone. I hope that you are all doing well and that training is going on well! I'm doing great over here in Liverpool. Training is going on very well and I'm preparing for my next race in less than a month's time.

Life over here is great, making new friends all the time, visiting new places, discovering places where I've never been before and best of all doing training ...

Dear Athletes

Following our first proper Group Coaching session last Saturday I would to know your views and what you feel is needed to improve.

The idea of the session on Saturday was, from a coaching point of view, to have a look at everyone's technique since most of you do their training on their own, and I need to start getting used to you. What I wanted to achieve was to get you all swimming a hard 1500m swim Time Trial not for the time, but to make everyone more comfortable ...

What a surprised to see and hear a report on Triathlon in the Maltese MAIN News ... and for a good cause.

Yesterday, TVM showed a report about obesity in Australia and the initiative of companies in Melbourne who organised an Olympic Triathlon for their employees to fight obesity. Some of the participants seemed clearly out of shape but they did it. This is how Triathlon should be promoted a sport for good health. Thank you and well done TVM.
